El Premio Príncipe de Asturias Avelino Corma, sobre la guerra y la crisis: «Ya es obligatorio el cambio a renovables»

The scientist from Castellón states that this war (from Russia to Ukraine) «has shown our fragility, because we are avid consumers of energy and heavily dependent on energy from fossil hydrocarbons.»

In the Valencian Community, where the Valencian Innovation Agency has brought together universities and public research centers with technological institutes and industries to adapt to decarbonization, it points out that the first step is to implement renewable electricity, which now only accounts for 7 to 8% .

It specifies that, once sufficient electrical energy is generated from solar and wind power , green hydrogen can be produced, intended to generate thermal energy and produce products such as methanol and ammonia, which will also serve to «store» and transport hydrogen.

Corma warns that «it is neither simple nor immediate» to replace all the energy used from fossil hydrocarbons, since Spain consumes more than one million barrels of oil per day alone, to which gas and coal would have to be added.
